CTUP Sponsors Visit by John Norquist, Renowned Speaker and Author

The Center for Transportation and Urban Planning is pleased to sponsor the visit of John Norquist to Hartford and New Haven. Mr. Norquist is one of the world's foremost experts on urban planning and transportation. He is an internationally-renowned speaker who has been a passionate advocate for reversing the corrosive effects that highways have had on our cities. As mayor of Milwaukee, he succeeded in removing a freeway, clearing the way for an anticipated $250 million investment in infill development. He has also been instrumental in advancing similar projects in Seattle, Buffalo and Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Norquist, now President of the Congress for the New Urbanism and author of "The Wealth of Cities," will speak Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street. In New Haven he will speak on Wednesday April 16, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at Career High School, 140 Legion Avenue. Both events are free and open to the public.

CTUP Director Part of Scoping Team in Sierra Leone

CTUP Director, Norman W. Garrick, was part of scoping team in July to Freetown, Sierra Leone with the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment (UK) to develop a project to aid in the growth and development of Freetown which is under tremendous growth pressure following the end of the decade long civil war in that country. The project was initiated by Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, following his visit to Freetown in November 2006.

During their visit, Dr. Garrick and the Foundation's team toured the entire metropolitan area - from the elegant but decaying downtown area, to the ghettos built on fill in the bays near the center, and to the acres of unauthorized housing decimating the forests on the mountains surrounding the city. The team also met with the President of Sierra Leone, Ahmad Kabbah, who spoke of the many pressures and depravations resulting from the unprecedented rate of urban growth in Freetown over the last decade. The next step in this on-going Prince's Foundation project in Freetown will be a weeklong design workshop focusing one or two specific projects that were selected based on the scoping study. This design workshop is slated to be held in Freetown in early in 2008.
